oneWhat value for money from cheap and easy?

We see hundreds of professionals every year who participate in our accredited and assessed programmes. We regularly have one or two participants in a group that have already attended a short course or event of some kind selected on the expectation that acquiring the competence to monitor and measure impact and value (ROI) effectively and efficiently would cost little time and effort. They leave these courses puzzled that they have been told, 'it's easy, just use this simple formula or this great calculation tool and hey presto, you have a report which shows you impact and value', only to discover that it's neither that easy and the magic tools provide little help in reporting credibly or improving the impact and value they get from their investments.

fiveCase study: Falls project: prevention is better than cure

Every year, more than 4,000 people aged over 60 turn up at Accident and Emergency departments in Leeds after a fall. This case study describes a major initative in NHS Leeds to reduce this number by focusing on prevention. Leeds NHS already had in place a 'community falls pathway', essentially a risk assessment process intended to screen over-60s, but there was concern that this was not fully understood, remembered or implemented by those community staff out in the front line.

As a result, there was too much focus on 'treating' and not enough on 'prevention'.

NHS Leeds decided it was time to revitalise the strategy and also important to be able to measure any initiatives to see what results were being achieved.

After hearing from a colleague who had been through the abdi training, Joan Kennedy, NHS Leeds' clinical pathway lead clinician, attended the abdi ROI UK Foundation workshop and completed the formal assessment, enabling her to apply the principles to this project.
